Heather Waldroup


Heather Waldroup is Associate Director of the Honors College and professor of art history at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. Her research examines the intersection of Western and Oceanic visual cultures since the late 19th century, with a focus on colonial photography, contemporary Indigenous art, and museum collection and display. Her work has been published in journals including Journal of Pacific History, History of Photography, Photography and Culture, Modernism/Modernity, Journeys, and Women's History Review and the anthologies Gauguin’s Challenge: New Perspectives After Postmodernism and Shifting Focus: Colonial Australian Photography, 1850-1920. Her current projects examine the work of photographers Anne Brigman and Doris Ulmann, and nineteenth-century photographic albums.
